Created largely between 1986 and 1992 the exhibited works belong to a series known as “The Hour Blue”. This title was borrowed by the artist from the writings of his great-grandfather, the celebrated French entomologist Jean-Henri Fabre who studied the mystical moment of transition between night and day when nocturnal creatures return to sleep and before diurnal creatures awake : a moment of perfect symmetry, total silence and absolute saturation. A ‘split’ in time.
In Fabre’s art this poetic hour becomes the intervening period leading towards all kinds of metamorphosis and outbreaks: animals, faces and objects appear on the surface of the deep blue drawings.
