Flemish and Dutch art in the collections of the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire in Geneva and the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Caen.

This exhibition, which draws on the rich collections of paintings and engravings at the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire in Geneva and the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Caen, analyses the rise and heyday of several genres in Flemish and Dutch art in the 16th and 17th centuries. At the beginning of the 16th century, new types of painting appeared in the northern and southern Netherlands and they gradually developed into true genres.

The exhibition makes a dynamic combination of the Geneva and Caen collections, creating coherent groups which each illustrate the major genres of traditional painting: devotional and history paintings, portraits, genre pieces, landscapes and still lifes. In the middle of each room, a series of old engravings by Rembrandt illustrates the important role the woodcut played in distinguishing these various subjects. Finally, each section of the exhibition also contains work by a contemporary artist at work in Flanders or the Netherlands. The guests whose work is exhibited amidst these old pieces include Jan Fabre, Hendrik Kerstens, Fiona Tan, Cyprien Gaillard and Hans Op De Beeck. These creations past and present thus demonstrate how narrative and symbolic subjects made way for a collective interest in the world, in the most sensitive way.
